The 2025 Steveston Spot Prawn & Seafood Celebration was a resounding success, with the village buzzing with locals and visitors eager to sample the season’s freshest catch.

Sales of live spot prawns at Fisherman’s Wharf kicked off on Wednesday, May 14, and continued through Tuesday, June 10. Although the season was shorter than in recent years due to fisheries closing to protect future stocks, demand was higher than ever.

To celebrate this iconic local harvest, Tourism Richmond once again partnered with the Steveston Harbour Authority to bring fresh energy to the village and attract even more visitors. Branded banners, flags, and information kiosks gave the area a festive flair, while live music performances every weekend added to the waterfront atmosphere.

A special promotion featuring 13 Richmond restaurants showcased dishes made with seafood sourced directly from Steveston-based fishers. Meanwhile, a social media contest to win 2 lbs of spot prawns drew over 2500 entries and 4500 comments, and a media event generated 59 pieces of coverage—reaching an impressive 3.7 million impressions.

The highlight of the celebration was Spot Prawn Day on Saturday, June 7—now a staple in Richmond’s summer calendar. The day featured a culinary stage with local chef demos, a kids’ zone, circus and music performances, and hands-on family activities like Gyotaku fish printing, community paint-by-numbers, and selfie stations. This year also coincided with World Oceans Day, and to mark the occasion the Gulf of Georgia Cannery put on a Sustainability Expo including interactive booths on marine life, ocean conservation and sustainable farming.

With sunshine overhead and crowds enjoying the festivities from Fisherman’s Wharf to the Cannery, the event truly launched the summer season in Steveston and showcased the village at its vibrant best.
