In an age where digital images can effortlessly reproduce the visible world, artist Junyi Ji advocates for the irreplaceable value of painting from life. Over the past year, Ji has traveled extensively throughout Vancouver and its surrounding areas to document coastlines, forests, parks, city streets, and mountains. Working without rehearsal or repetition, every brushstroke responds to a moment that exists only once.
“Plein air painting is a dialogue with time,” says Ji. “Each work is created on location, shaped by changing weather, shifting light, and the fleeting rhythm of the day. For me, it is not simply an act of copying nature, but a continual process of observation and understanding.”
Ji’s paintings seek to capture more than just visual accuracy; they preserve the atmosphere, temperature, and emotion of a specific time and place. As sunlight moves across a façade, or the shadows of trees slowly drift, the canvas preserves the quiet presence of Vancouver’s bays, bridges, churches, harbors, and cherry blossoms as lived experiences.
