Heading to Richmond on the Canada Line? Consider a pit stop visit to this bustling Chinese bakery, located just across the street from Richmond-Brighouse Station. Value-priced at $2 to $3 each, its shelves are lined with individually wrapped buns filled with tuna, chicken, curry beef and more. Sausage buns––including a deep-fried version––are top-sellers here, and there are lots of sweet options to try as well (pineapple buns included).

CURRY PUFFS AT JOHN 3:16 MALAYSIAN EXPRESS

Aberdeen Centre, 4151 Hazelbridge Way, Richmond, B.C.

Head to the bustling upper level food court at Aberdeen Centre and you’ll find this ever-popular counter––a satellite of one of Richmond’s best Malaysian restaurants. Snack-wise, we love their curry puffs: warm pastry parcels filled to bursting with a steamy, spicy concoction of chunky potatoes, vegetables and chicken morsels. And if you’re still hungry, why not tuck into an order of delicious crispy yam rolls as well?!

SPAM MUSUBI AT ALOHA HAWAIIAN GRILL

110 – 3900 Bayview Street, Richmond, B.C.

This colourful and inviting Steveston eatery serves a great array of perfectly prepared Hawaiian comfort dishes. But when a satisfying little snack is required, go straight for their homestyle SPAM musubi. A teriyaki-glazed SPAM slice on top of a seasoned rice pillow wrapped in a sheet of nori, it’s a sweet-savoury treat that’s bursting with flavour. Expect to return for a second helping before you leave the village!

MOCHI AT CAR’S DESSERT

110 – 4140 No. 3 Road, Richmond, B.C.

Arrive early to avoid the line-up at this tiny, takeout-only storefront near the Canada Line’s Aberdeen Station. You’ll find pies and sago puddings on the menu here but don’t miss their amazing mochi. These delicate, fresh-made orbs of delight come in a small array of well-chosen flavours, including purple yam and top-selling mango––where the creamy filling is studded with chunks of fresh fruit.

CORNISH SAUSAGE ROLL AT STEVESTON’S BEST OF BRITISH

110 – 12031 First Avenue, Richmond, B.C.

Specializing in imported UK cakes, crisps and candy bars, this Steveston store also serves delicious British-recipe pastries, made right here in Richmond. The savoury pies and fruit turnovers are popular but we especially love their warmed-to-order sausage rolls. With a soft veneer of shortcrust pastry enclosing a generous filling, varieties include beef, pork, curry beef and the lovely Cornish version, with its seasoned beef-and-vegetable filling.

TAIYAKI AT LITTLE PISCES

128 – 8531 Alexandra Road, Richmond, B.C.

Tucked along Richmond’s restaurant-packed “Eat Street,” this bright and friendly little café serves authentic, made-to-order Japanese-style taiyaki––fish-shaped dessert treats made from waffle-like batter and filled with your choice of luscious fillings. Those dozen or so filling options include best-selling custard, Nutella and red bean––but on our visit, we discovered that our personal favourite is the salted egg yolk version.

PORK BUNS AT CHINESE BAOZI MASTER

Yaohan Centre, 3700 No. 3 Road, Richmond, B.C.

Sink your teeth into a warm parcel of steamed bun deliciousness at this food court counter and you’ll discover a savoury centre filled with soft, juicy meat––so juicy, in fact, that a napkin may be immediately required. Available in pork or beef varieties (plus cabbage-added versions), these hearty Northern Chinese snacks are handmade right in front of you. And in the unlikely event of ongoing hunger, you can also pick up some Chinese doughnuts here as well.

ONIGIRI AT IZUMIYA JAPANESE MARKETPLACE

160 – 7971 Alderbridge Way, Richmond, B.C.

Check out the chilled cabinets at this unassuming Japanese grocery store and you’ll find several varieties of fresh-made onigiri––triangular, nori-wrapped rice parcels with fillings such as salmon, chicken and pickled plum. Save time to browse the store’s other takeout options (we love the chicken katsu sandos) and consider picking up some senbei rice snacks and a can of Pocari Sweat pop to create your own hearty picnic.

TOASTED BAGEL AT STEVESTON COFFEE COMPANY

3511 Moncton Street, Richmond, B.C.

You don’t have to be a hobbit to enjoy a second breakfast, especially if you’re feeling the mid-morning hunger pangs on a visit to Steveston. For less than $4, you can tuck into a warm, freshly toasted bagel at this chatty local legend, complete with a generous side-serving of cream cheese. The perfect fuel for a walk around the village, make sure you pick up a coffee while you’re here and also consider popping back for a hearty muffin snack later on.

WHEEL CAKES AT PEANUTS BUBBLE TEA

Richmond Public Market, 8260 Westminster Highway, Richmond, B.C.

There’s a tempting array of well-priced Asian-themed vendors at the second-floor Richmond Public Market food court. But if all you’re craving is a quick and tasty treat, don’t miss the warm, fresh-made Taiwanese wheel cakes at Peanuts. These popular little pancake-batter snacks come with a variety of sweet, gooey filling options––including coconut, matcha white chocolate and black sesame mocha––and there are a couple of savoury varieties to sample as well.
