This month, Tourism Richmond explored Richmond’s innovative lodging option, Panda Pod Hotel, through a conversation with its founder, Sharon Cheung. Sharon shares insights into the unique aspects of running a pod hotel and the broader impact on the local community.

1. Could you give us a brief overview of the Panda Pod Hotel and its concept?
Panda Pod Hotel, established in 2019, is the first capsule hotel in Greater Vancouver, drawing inspiration from Japan’s pod-style accommodations. Located at 6940 Number 3 Road in Richmond, it caters to North American travellers seeking affordable, quality lodging. The minimalist design combined with modern amenities offers a private, secure, and comfortable stay.
2. What was the inspiration behind creating the Panda Pod Hotel?
The inspiration stemmed from the need for cost-effective, space-efficient lodging in urban centers with high real estate costs. Panda Pod Hotel was conceived to fill this gap by providing a unique hospitality experience that blends innovation, affordability, and comfort.

3. Who typically stays at the Panda Pod Hotel?
The hotel attracts a diverse group, including budget-conscious tourists, solo travellers, students, digital nomads, and business travellers, including pilots and crew members. It also appeals to seniors seeking social interactions in a hospitable environment and travellers catching early flights due to its proximity to Vancouver International Airport.
4. As the founder, what do you find most rewarding about your role?
As the founder and operator of Panda Pod Hotel, I oversee strategic planning, guest experience, team culture, and community partnerships. The most rewarding aspect of my role is seeing the positive impact our innovative hotel model has on our guests and the broader tourism industry. It’s incredibly fulfilling to enhance guest experiences while contributing to the community. I take great pride in how we integrate innovation while keeping our approach personal and human-centered.
5. What unique services set Panda Pod Hotel apart from other accommodations?
The hotel stands out as the only pod hotel in the Greater Vancouver Area, known for its great value and high-quality accommodation. Here are some of the unique features guests can expect:
- Innovative Check-In Process: The hotel offers a smooth, contactless check-in experience using a greeting robot and self-check-in system that includes ID checks and facial recognition technology.
- High Cleanliness Standards: Panda Pod Hotel ensures cleanliness through automated and manual cleaning practices.
- Food and Beverage Options: While there is no full-service restaurant onsite, guests have access to complimentary bottled water, coffee, and tea. The hotel is located in the center of Richmond’s bustling food scene, encouraging guests to try the many excellent dining options just steps away.
- Room Choices: The hotel offers standard single-occupancy pods, which come equipped with privacy screens, ventilation, lighting, USB/power outlets, mirrors, and personal lockers. Plans to introduce couple pods are in the works.
- Accessibility: Conveniently located on No. 3 Road, just a brief stroll from the Richmond-Brighouse SkyTrain Station, Panda Pod Hotel is well-connected by public transit, ensuring it’s easily accessible for all visitors. The hotel features accessible pods to accommodate guests with mobility needs.
- Technological Innovations: Panda Pod Hotel uses the latest technology to enhance guest safety and satisfaction, including AI chatbots for inquiries, late-night AI concierge services, and digital locks on pod rooms. Security codes are unique to each guest and are cleared after checkout. The hotel also uses third-party ID verification systems to maintain a secure environment and is always looking into new tech advancements.

6. How does Panda Pod Hotel engage with the Richmond community? Could you elaborate on any recent initiatives?
Panda Pod Hotel actively engages with the Richmond community by partnering with local businesses, educational institutions, and cultural events to enhance community tourism. Recently, they’ve discussed with the City of Vancouver about transforming underused office spaces into affordable pod housing ahead of the FIFA World Cup 26™, supporting regional affordability initiatives. Additionally, they are developing a new social media channel to share stories about local businesses and the people behind them, further connecting with the community.
7. Can you tell us a bit more about the Free Video Promotion Opportunity?
Panda Pod Hotel is building YouTube and TikTok channels to promote local businesses in Richmond by sharing the stories of the people behind them. This initiative highlights the diversity of the community and the drives of its entrepreneurs.
Channel Overview: The project focuses on the personal stories behind various businesses, from unique restaurants and boutiques to tour companies that enhance local experiences. This approach helps connect audiences with the real people behind the businesses.
Objectives: The channel aims to display the variety of businesses in Richmond, foster stronger business connections, and motivate entrepreneurs, particularly in the hospitality and tourism sectors. The goal is to illustrate how each business uniquely adds to Richmond’s appeal and to emphasize that perseverance and commitment are essential for success.
Benefits for Tourism Businesses: Participating businesses can raise their profile and communicate the distinct qualities and passion behind their brands. This increases engagement with both local residents and tourists, enhancing connections.

8. Are there other community engagement efforts by Panda Pod Hotel that you’d like to highlight?
Yes, I founded True Leaf Home, a non-profit aimed at reducing housing insecurity. This organization adopts the efficient, compact design principles similar to those used in the athlete accommodations at the past two Olympics in Tokyo and Paris. By employing this innovative approach, True Leaf Home creates modular, sustainable shelters for those in need.
True Leaf Homes enhances the community by providing affordable housing solutions and generating employment opportunities through partnerships with local organizations. This initiative offers practical training in assembly and logistics and sets a precedent for socially responsible innovation that could be adopted across sectors.
