Venue Spotlight: Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site
Located along the scenic Fraser River in Steveston, Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site is a rare collection of restored heritage buildings that tell the story of Richmond’s multicultural fishing industry. The site represents more than 100 years of West Coast maritime history, with wooden structures dating from the 1880s through the 1950s.
Today, visitors can enjoy scenic boardwalk walks, guided tours, and seasonal programs that bring the stories of the diverse communities who lived and worked here to life.

What planners may not know about hosting an event at a National Historic Site
Hosting an event at a historic site offers built-in storytelling, atmosphere, and a true sense of place. These elements are complemented by preserved structures and displays that naturally elevate an event without the need for extensive décor.
While the buildings themselves are historic, the event spaces are adaptable and supported by experienced staff who understand both conservation standards and event logistics.

Tailoring the experience for each event
The Britannia Shipyards team collaborates with planners from the initial inquiry stage to understand their vision, audience, and event objectives. From corporate receptions to community celebrations and cultural gatherings, the team helps customize layouts, recommend trusted local vendors, and suggest ways to incorporate the site’s maritime heritage into the program.

A memorable moment at the site
Many memorable events have taken place in the Seine Net Loft, the site’s largest rental venue. One recent highlight was Tourism Richmond’s End of Summer Mix & Mingle, held there last year.
Industry partners described the venue as a “hidden gem,” located just 10–15 minutes from Richmond’s city centre. With views of the Fraser River and the sunset beyond Steveston Village over the Salish Sea, it created a memorable setting for the evening.
The Seine Net Loft is scheduled for restoration in 2026 and is expected to reopen in summer 2027.

Why planners choose a heritage venue
For planners seeking a unique and immersive experience, a heritage venue offers an authenticity that cannot be replicated in a traditional meeting space. The site’s history creates a meaningful connection to the destination, the place, and the community.
