Fisherman's Wharf in Richmond, BC
Located along the pier next to Steveston Landing (on Bayview Street at Second Avenue), Fisherman’s Wharf boasts incredible views of the Fraser River and Steveston’s famed fishing fleet. Visitors have flocked here since the wharf’s inception in 1989 to watch fishermen unload their catch and head back out to sea. The public fish sales float is a place where you can purchase fresh fish, shrimp, crabs, sea urchins and spot prawns directly from the fishermen who caught them.
A variety of seafood is available at different times of year, with April and May being two of the busiest months because fresh spot prawns are in season. Spot prawns are a West Coast delicacy known across the world for their sweet flavour and firm texture, and fresh prawns are only available for six to eight weeks. During this time, lineups along Fisherman’s Wharf are not uncommon as people try to get their hands on this delicacy. For those who would rather have the prawns prepared for them, many local restaurants offer special spot prawn dishes that are worth a try!
Although the sales float is always open, fishing vessels come and go as they please and keep their own hours, so you never know exactly what you’ll find. Your best bet is to go earlier in the day before the boats sell out. The Steveston Harbour Authority has the most up-to-date information on which fishing vessels will be at the public fish sales float and what is available and when.
