Step back in time with new four-hour historic tour and tasting experience
September 6, 2018, Richmond, BC – Step back in time to 1914 with your guide, John Thomas, a fisherman from the historic fishing village of Steveston, in a brand-new historic tour: The Steveston Heritage Experience.
Produced in partnership by the Steveston Historical Society, the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site, Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site, the Steveston Tram and the Steveston Museum and Tourism Richmond’s Pacific. Authentic. Scholarship, this new experience ties together the four historic sites in a progressive story led by a professional interpreter.

The tour flows seamlessly with an integrated story led by the talented Andrew Wade telling the history of Steveston and Richmond. Visitors won’t be disappointed.”
“We’re excited to share Steveston’s history and culinary charms in the new tour,” said Linda Barnes, chair of the board of the Steveston Historical Society. “There’s so much to explore here, for both residents and tourists and the new Heritage Experience will hopefully give them a different perspective of the fishing village.”
The Steveston Heritage Experience include:
- The Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site – Visitors step back in time as they tour the community of boatyards, canneries, residences and stores room a time when fishing and boatbuilding were flourishing industries on the Fraser River.
- Steveston Tram – Learn about Tram Car 1220, one of only seven British Columbia Electric Rail operated trams left. Tram Car 1220 tells the story of Richmond’s transportation heritage and how one rail line helped develop the City of Richmond we know today.
- Steveston Museum – Housed inside Steveston’s first bank and adjacent to the Japanese Fisherman’s Benevolent Society Building, visitors will learn more about the Nikkei history in Steveston.
- Gulf of Georgia National Historic Site – The tour ends at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery, where visitors will enjoy a guided tour of the historic cannery and learn how the once-thriving fishing industry lured people from vast cultural backgrounds to Canada’s west coast in the late 1800s.
At each attraction, carefully chosen food and beverage tastings will be served, offering visitors a literal taste of life from 1914, culminating with a classic favourite: delicious seafood chowder from Pajo’s Fish & Chips, paired with a craft brew of the day from Steveston’s Britannia Brewing Co. It’s the perfect way to travel back in time while keeping your taste buds fully entertained.
This highly-anticipated tour will launch in the fall, with a public tour on October 6, with more public tours scheduled for 2019. Join the Steveston Heritage Tour and embark on a cultural journey of Steveston’s historic sites.

About the Pacific. Authentic. Scholarship: The objective of the Pacific. Authentic. Scholarship is to support the growth of Richmond’s tourism industry, not only by investing financially, but also by being actively involved in the initiative through mentoring stakeholders to deepen their travel industry expertise, and to also expand their marketing capabilities. Successful applicants will receive up to $20,000 funding, which can be used towards the development and marketing of a new partnered tourism experience. Along with the funding, Tourism Richmond will aid in project management, marketing coaching and support. Applications are now being accepted for the 2019 scholarship.
