What’s not to love about Happy Hour? Discounted drinks and eats make for the perfect wind-down after the stresses of the day. Here are some recommended places for sippin’ on the cheap in Richmond.

1. Milltown Bar & Grill

Situated on Richmond Island (look for a bright red building), Milltown Bar & Grill offers superb views of the Fraser River, the airport and the marina. From 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., Monday to Friday, draft beer is only $4.35, and glasses of Blasted Church Hatfield’s Fuse and Big Bang Theory are $7. The food menu matches the rustic wood décor (the site was formerly a wood mill), with accessible, West Coast options that range from Loaded Barge Nachos (small $14.50; large $19), Margherita pizza ($14.25), to a Maple Salmon Salad with maple glazed salmon, strawberries, roasted almonds, goat cheese and mixed greens with honey apple vinaigrette ($16).

2. O’Hare’s Gastropub

This tribute to Irish conviviality has been a Richmond institution since 1987. While Guinness is always a good bet, their 3 to 6 p.m. Happy Hour specials include all sleeves of B.C. craft beer (eg. Postmark Pilsner) for $5, as well as house red and white wine. During Happy House, a selection of the gastropub appies are $8 each, including a half pound of peel and eat prawns with vodka cocktail sauce, crispy Salt and Pepper Dry Ribs with soy dipping sauce, and Potato Skins loaded with cheese, bacon, green onion and sour cream.

Location: 5031 Steveston Hwy.

3. The Flying Beaver

Every hour is basically Happy Hour at this bustling bar located in the Harbour Air seaplane terminal (the views from the floor-to-ceiling windows are incredible). Each day features a range of food and drink specials, like Mondays, which offer sleeves of Sleeman Original draught for $4.56 (all day), and 2 for 1 appies (after 4:30 p.m.). The Halibut Tacos with blackened halibut, mango salsa, chipotle aioli and coleslaw are a crowd favourite. If you’re a fan of wings, on Wednesdays you can get them for 60 cents each (after 4:30 p.m.), along with sleeves of Sleeman Honey Brown lager ($4.56, all day) and their Sunset cocktail, consisting of raspberry-infused vodka and 7-Up ($4.78, all day).

Happy Hour here runs from 3 to 6 p.m. (and from 9 p.m. until closing!), and includes glasses of Peller Estates’ chardonnay and merlot, Red Truck lager and ale, Stanley Park ale, and high balls for $4.50. You can’t go wrong with chef Alex Hancock’s inventive Happy Hour snacks, which include Tandoori Spiced Calamari ($7), open-faced Mediterranean Spiced Lamb Sliders ($5) and Charred Naan and Carrot Hummus ($5).

Their Happy Hour (3 to 6 p.m.) includes Corona beer and high balls for $4, in addition to many of their most popular appetizers, such as Mini Yorkies, with braised shaved Alberta beef, horseradish aioli, grainy Dijon jus, and crispy onion ($1.50 each); Mac and Cheese Sticks with spicy sriracha ketchup ($1.50 each); and Chili Lime Chicken Tacos ($2 each).
