Mark your calendars. This Sunday (August 23), from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Terra Nova Rural Park will be the site for Richmond’s seventh annual Garlic Festival. Along with a farmers market that celebrates garlic, you can expect offerings from top local restaurants, cooking demonstrations, live music, and kid friendly activities that will keep the whole family entertained. In the lead-up to this great event, here are five dishes that you can try now to get your palate (and breath) primed for this weekend’s garlic celebration.
1. Garlic Prawns at Tapenade Bistro
Lean in close to this dish and you’ll get delicious wafts of sautéed minced garlic. White wine, butter, minced parsley and shallots also take these perfectly cooked prawns to the next level. Sop up the garlicky sauce left behind with crisp slices of baguette ($9.50).
Location: 3711 Bayview St., Richmond
2. Garlic Ribs at Good Eat Seafood Restaurant
You won’t find these addictive ribs on the menu, but be sure to ask your server if the kitchen can whip you up a batch. They’re coated in flour and minced garlic, and then deep-fried until golden and slightly crisp on the outside ($16.80). You’ll be fighting with family and friends over the last rib on the plate.
Location: 8111 Leslie Rd., Richmond
3. Marguerite Zero at Steveston Pizza Co.
Garlic transforms when roasted, becoming wonderfully sweet, and almost buttery in texture. Each incredible bite of this pizza ($20) brings together the sweetness of the roasted garlic and caramelized onion with the salty zing of anchovies and capers, and the freshness of the tomatoes and peppery arugula.
Location: 100-3400 Moncton St., Richmond
4. Deep Fried Tofu Pudding in Garlic Sauce at Dinesty Dumpling House
This crowd favourite at Dinesty consists of deep-fried silky tofu, served in a sauce with intense garlic flavour ($4.95). Make sure to attack them quickly before the crisp outer layer goes soft. The tofu, with its custard consistency and neutral taste, contrasts beautifully with the garlic.
Location: 160-8111 Akroyd Rd., Richmond
5. Grilled Beef Ramen in Black Pepper Garlic Broth at Yuu Japanese Tapas
The tonkotsu (pork bone) broth at Yuu becomes even richer, and more flavourful, with the addition of black pepper and plenty of garlic ($10.95). Besides ramen noodles, your generous bowl of comfort food comes with nori, green onion, pickled ginger, and strips of tender, marinated grilled beef. You may need a breath mint after you’ve slurped down every last drop of the soup, but your love of garlic will most definitely be satisfied.
