Fed up with watching movies on your laptop screen? Longing for a fun summer evening in the fresh air? Or maybe you just want to take the family out without opening your wallet? You can cover all three approaches in Richmond this July and August with the return of Lansdowne Centre’s free drive-in movie screenings.

What is it?

Running every Wednesday evening from July 4 to August 29, the Starlight Theatre Drive-in Movie Series transforms a section of the mall’s parking lot into a free-entry outdoor cinema—with its own giant pop-up film screen.

Guests are invited to load-up their cars and arrive early to snag a spot—gates open at 6pm—with the screen flickering to life with the night’s big feature just after dusk (typically around 9:30pm). Audio for the movies is broadcast over FM radio.

But vehicles aren’t essential for this particular drive-in. Just a short stroll from the Canada Line's Lansdowne station, walk-ins can bring their own lawn chairs to a special front-row viewing area with its own speakers. Just be sure to dress warmly and perhaps bring a blanket or two for an extra-cozy evening.

What’s on?

Lansdowne launched its family-friendly summertime movie series in 2014. And this year’s sequel offers a diverse line-up of flicks ranging from musicals to romance and from superhero blockbusters to adrenaline-rushing action classics. Check out the following scheduled screenings and mark your calendar accordingly:

July 4: The Greatest Showman

July 11: How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days

July 18: The Lego Ninjago Movie

July 25: Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation

August 1: The Notebook

August 8: Raiders of the Lost Ark

August 15: Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle

August 22: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

August 29: Black Panther

Keep in mind that this line-up may change and also note that screenings could be rearranged if rain or wind rolls in faster than a weather-themed disaster movie.

And don’t worry if you’ve rushed out the door to snag your drive-in spot without grabbing dinner first. Lansdowne Centre's restaurants and eateries are offering a full menu of drink and dining specials on each Wednesday movie night.
