Hey y’all, Linds here. I woke up with a head cold yesterday, and have been in a mild to strong state of grumpy ever since. I’ve also been in shock, because I thought colds were illegal in the summer. Isn’t it against the law to be in bed if the sun’s still shining and the sky’s a clear blue? Where’s the justice? The justice!
Criminal charges have yet (yet) to be laid against whoever gave this to me, but I did find the ideal meal for my current state. I mustered enough energy to get to Aberdeen Station, walk 3 minutes south down No. 3 Road, and sit in Pho 78 for a bowl of chicken pho and a shrimp salad roll. I’m struggling to write about it in any kind of entertaining way, but here goes. Warning: I may not include all so-called “necessary” articles and pronouns today. _ apologize.
Salad roll was tasty. Less lettuce than I would have liked, but fresh. Good, not-too-sweet peanut sauce.
Pho arrived. Large knot of rice noodles in the centre of the bowl, surrounded by an almost clear broth. Slices of dark chicken meat, chopped green onion, with bean sprouts, Thai basil, a wedge of lime, and a few slices of pepper on the side.
Broth was by far the best part; exactly what my aching soul needed. Flavourful without being too salty, giving the noodles a mild, savoury taste. Chicken was tender and cut to just the right size to fit into the spoon.
It was actually the perfect meal for my cold-weary self, and the small pho + roll combo came to under ten bucks. I then proceeded to walk zombie-like to the sky train station, get myself home, and go back to bed.
I know, you probably want me to stop, as this is just way too interesting and your brains can’t handle all the spectacular information I’m throwing at them.
But I will say this: I’d go back to Pho 78. The pho is great, the prices are right, it’s spacious, clean, has a menu with variety, and is located just a short walk from the Skytrain. It’s also next to a restaurant supply store, so you can pickup a rolling pin or large whisk before your lunch. SCORE.
Alright, I’m going to leave you now and go back to bed. I feel a little sad about this considering it’s a beautiful day outside, but here’s a gorgeous little summer film from Kitchen Vignettes. It’s a nice way to start your weekend, and something to make me feel better about mine. Happy Saturday, all!
