RICHMOND COUNTRY FARMS

12900 Steveston Highway
Open 7 Days a week, 9 am – 7 pm

Most know Richmond Country Farms for their pumpkin patch during the Halloween season, but they have so much more to offer during the rest of the year. Owned and operated by the Hogler family since 1978, their expansive farm land has a market, nursery, restaurant and vineyard on it’s property.

The market at Richmond Country Farms offers local and organic vegetables and fruits once they come into season. Currently, they have strawberries, raspberries, cherries and blueberries along with other vegetables available. As the season progresses, you’ll be able to purchase corn, squash and pumpkins. While exploring the market, you may run into friendly chickens and ducks roaming the area.

This family-friendly farm offers train rides during the weekends and holidays that traverse the entire property. Children will experience the entire farm, complete with it’s horses, pumpkin patch, vineyard and Duck lake. The train departs every 30 minutes.

If you’ve got a green thumb, they have a good selection of trees, shrubs, annuals, perennials, seeds and indoor plants at the nursery. The very knowledgeable staff can answer any questions or address concerns regarding any of the plants in the nursery, so feel free to ask any one of them for help.

During the Halloween season, Richmond Country Farms hosts school field trips and families at their pumpkin patch. With live music from the farm band, costumed entertainers, lemonade and mini donuts, there’s a lot to see while picking your pumpkin! Be sure to bring your rain boots!

YUMMY YARDS

7200 Steveston Highway
Wednesdays 3-7pm, Saturdays 10am-5pm

Starting off with growing food in friends’ yards back in 2011, Yummy Yards has since expanded to two acres at the Urban Edibles Farm in Richmond. All their crops are grown naturally with no pesticides or synthetic fertilizers.

What differentiates Yummy Yards from the rest is that they offer a Community Shared Agriculture (CSA) program that connects consumers directly with their food producers. With this program, members of the CSA will purchase a share of the production at the beginning of the season – with fresh produce like arugula, cabbage, carrots, cucumbers, bell peppers and much more throughout the summer in fall. Members pick up their weekly shares at the farm where they’re able to meet the farmers and ask any questions they may have with locally grown produce.

This initiative not only lets members visit where their produce is grown from, but also allows small scale farmers to survive with capital at the beginning of each season.

Additionally, they have a farm stand where you can purchase produce, jams, flowers, eggs, honey and other locally made items and it’s open on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

W&A FARMS

Agriculture---Harvesting--(6)

17771 Westminster Highway,
Closed until End of July/Early August

This family-run farm has been operating since 1948 and is known for it’s delicious and bountiful strawberry fields. You can either buy strawberries by the basket or flats or you can make a day of it and pick your own strawberries!  Strawberry season is from the end of May to the end of June. They re-open again during the end of July/beginning of August with vegetables including dill cucumbers, beets, carrots, an assortment of different potatoes and super sweet corn. Items like cauliflower, broccoli, kale and zucchini are available mid August; gourds (like pumpkins and squash) during September and Brussels sprouts throughout November and December.

THE SHARING FARM

2771 Westminster Highway

While not technically a farm you can visit and purchase from directly, it is a farm worth investing in. At the Sharing Farm, you can donate and shop small items to help their cause: providing food to feed Richmond families that are less fortunate. The Sharing Farm grows vegetables on a small, donated piece of land. They recently moved over to 4 acres in the Terra Nova Rural Park. They have donated over 14,000 lbs of fresh produce throughout the years. There are several ways you can support the Sharing Farm: through an annual membership, shopping their homemade items and through sponsorship. They also offer a Community Supported Agriculture initiative, with a weekly harvest box full of carrots, beets, squashes, beans and broccoli to name a few. You can even donate your harvest box to the Richmond Food Bank.
