Famous around the world for its exceptional Chinese cuisine, Richmond is also home to outstanding flavours and culinary traditions from across Asia. But while hungry locals and visitors can easily find authentic dishes from Korea, Vietnam, Malaysia and beyond, Richmond’s remarkably diverse Japanese cuisine is equally worth exploring.

From vibrant izakayas to slurp-worthy ramen joints and from cute dessert cafés to super-fresh sushi spots––and everything else in between––we’ve discovered lots of great Japanese eateries in Richmond over the years. Looking for insider tips? Read on for some suggestions––then gather your friends and family for a memorable Japanese dining experience.

YUU JAPANESE TAPAS

1118 – 3779 Sexsmith Road, Richmond, BC

Ramen is the foundation of the menu at this warm and welcoming Richmond eatery, and you’ll find multiple options (heat fans should order the spicy tonkotsu broth). But if you’re really hungry, consider a steaming bowl of cream curry udon topped with a swirl of mashed potato and a side of deep-fried prawns. In the unlikely event that you’re still peckish, add a tapas order of gyoza dumplings or octopus balls to fill you up for the rest of the week.

ORETACHI CURRY RICHMOND

150 – 12420 No. 1 Road, Richmond, BC

One of Japan’s greatest comfort food creations––and an ideal way to warm up on chilly days––is curry rice: a heaping plate of white rice bordered by a mini-lake of curry sauce plus a panko-crusted katsu pork or chicken cutlet. Located in Steveston, this authentic restaurant hits all the right umami notes with its signature, Osaka-style dishes, but they also offer intriguing alternatives such as curry ramen, natto curry and oyster cutlet curry.

OISHII FOOD HALL RICHMOND

180 – 6386 No. 3 Road, Richmond, BC

Steps from Richmond-Brighouse Canada Line Station, this mini food court houses three Japanese-forward vendors. On our recent visit, we took a seat alongside the lanterns and paper screens at Oishinoya. They specialize in gyudon rice bowls of succulent, thinly sliced beef in a sukiyaki-style broth––ours was also topped with a lightly poached egg, pickled ginger and fresh green onion. We’ll definitely return soon to check out the hall’s other counters: Pokey Okey and Nonbiri Cafe.

MYOMI SUSHI

190 – 8780 Blundell Road, Richmond, BC

From high-end places to independent local businesses, Richmond has countless sushi eateries––and everyone has their favourite. Personally, we love this unpretentious Blundell Plaza spot, especially for its friendly ambience and ever-fresh ingredients. There’s a well-priced array of nigiri, aburi and special rolls (consider the spicy Grouse Mountain roll), but we typically go for the good-value lunch and dinner combos with their multiple small dishes and sides––salmon teriyaki dinner version recommended.

ICHIRO JAPANESE RESTAURANT

110 – 12011 Second Avenue, Richmond, BC

Celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2026, seafood fans from around the region flock to this Steveston institution for its authentic, perfectly prepared fresh catch dishes. Service is famously excellent here, but give yourself plenty of time to peruse the menu of sushi and sashimi options, alongside traditional noodle, rice bowl and bento box possibilities––these set meals are especially popular at Ichiro and come in varieties such as katsu, teriyaki, vegetable and more.

GANBEI IZAKAYA

133 – 4800 No. 3 Road, Richmond, BC

The Japanese equivalent of chatty neighbourhood pubs, izakayas offer a fun night out for friends––complete with shareable eats and ever-flowing beer. With its boisterous vibe and anime-themed art, Ganbei is one of our current favourites. And its menu is a greatest hits package of izakaya classics, including unagi tamago, chicken karaage and street-food-style yakitori skewers.

IZUMIYA JAPANESE MARKETPLACE

160 – 7971 Alderbridge Way, Richmond, BC

Looking for tasty takeout? Don’t miss the well-stocked chiller shelves at this hidden gem Japanese grocery store. Start with the multiple varieties of fresh-made onigiri: triangular, nori-wrapped rice parcels with fillings such as salmon, chicken and pickled plum. Then browse the multiple bento boxes, ready-to-eat entrée trays and––one of our favourites––tasty chicken katsu sandwiches. Add some senbei rice snacks and a can of Pocari Sweat pop for a fun at-home feast.

YUDI PATISSERIE

1195 – 8580 Alexandra Road, Richmond, BC

Japan’s umami mastery means its sweet tooth is sometimes overlooked. But it has a rich heritage of delicious desserts––including irresistible creations that fuse French and Japanese sensibilities. If you’re keen to find out what that means, head to this Richmond patisserie. Freshly made on-site, choosing from the cakes here is not easy, but we recommend their Mont Blanc, a heavenly dome of chestnut cream, mascarpone cream, chocolate ganache and pistachio sponge cake.

LITTLE PISCES

128 – 8531 Alexandra Road, Richmond, BC

Also located on Alexandra (aka “Food Street”), this bright and colourful little dessert café specializes in Japanese taiyaki pastries: sweet, fish-shaped treats made from waffle-like batter and filled with luscious fillings selected from a wall-mounted menu. The dozen or so filling options include custard, Nutella and red bean, but we especially love the salted egg yolk. They also offer bowls of soft-serve ice cream, topped with upside down taiyaki cones!
