From ramen to hot pot, Richmond’s authentic Asian dining scene is a well-known lure for local and visiting foodies. But the city is also home to an under-the-radar menu of restaurants that showcase delicious dishes and culinary traditions from other parts of the world.

Keen to dive into fresh-made Mexican tacos, velvet-soft Greek souvlaki, aromatic Iranian saffron rice cakes and more? Read on for our road-tested Richmond recommendations, then gather your friends and family and plan a taste-tripping dining adventure.

Kisamos Greek Taverna

3420 Moncton Street, Richmond, BC

Step inside this warm, family-run Steveston restaurant––complete with folksy fishing village artwork on the walls––and you’ll feel like you’ve been transported to a sun-dappled Greek island. It’s hard to stop yourself from gorging on the warm pita bread that quickly arrives at your table, but save room for a choice selection of classic Mediterranean comfort dishes––including feast-like servings of moussaka, souvlaki or butter-soft roast lamb.

Little Mexico Cantina

150-3131 Chatham Street, Richmond, BC

The menu at this popular Steveston staple reads like a road map of regional Mexican cuisine, with options ranging from fajitas and enchiladas to a delicious seafood stew and a huge array of taco choices. The salsa, hot sauces and crispy nachos at Little Mexico Cantina are all made from scratch, and serve as the the foundation of the restaurant’s success. This is the perfect spot for sharing a selection of small plates and a margarita or two.

Lamajoun

128-11782 River Road, Richmond, BC

This highly welcoming Armenian bakery café has a loyal following of in-the-know fans that regularly drop by for takeout treats such as sweet baklava or savoury pastry boreks. But we recommend ordering a selection of shareable dishes and grabbing a table upstairs. Our recommendations? The beef-packed khinkali dumplings; delicious homestyle soups; and the hearty cheese pastry ‘boat’ filled with three types of cheese and topped with an egg.

Ginger Indian Cuisine

490-9100 Blundell Road, Richmond, BC

Specializing in Punjabi dishes from northern India, we love the rich butter prawn entrée and delicious keema naan breads at this large city centre strip mall restaurant. There’s a huge menu here (consider browsing your options online before you arrive), including an unusually large selection of tasty vegetarian dishes. Hungry for more? Also consider London Landing’s Ember Indian Kitchen, which fuses classic Indian comfort dishes with intriguing Ugandan influences.

Damien’s Belgian Waffles

3891 Chatham Street, Richmond, BC

Beeline to this bright-walled breakfast and lunch café and check out the chalkboard specials of sweet and savoury waffle options. Naturally, the chunky, Liege-style waffles are the stars of the show here and they come in a wide variety of flavours, from matcha to dark chocolate to maple caramel. And if you fall for these hearty pastries, you can pick-up some frozen ones to take home––breakfast will never be the same again.

Anar

12051 Third Avenue, Richmond, BC

This highly hospitable Iranian restaurant is a must-try for anyone unfamiliar with Persian cuisine. With echoes of Turkish, Greek and even Russian food traditions, you’ll discover enticing meat and vegetable dishes, many of them accompanied by aromatic saffron rice. The slow-cooked lamb shank (aka Baghali Polo Ba Gosht) is amazing, while the weekday lunch specials are also excellent. And don’t miss the traditional tea, served in a red glass alongside a decadent stuffed date.

BiBo

7899 Templeton Station Road, Richmond, BC

Need a break during your bargain-hunting visit to McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Vancouver? Pull up a seat at one of the shopping complex’s 10 popular eateries. We love BiBo’s wild salmon gnocchi, but sharing a luscious capricciosa pizza is also highly recommended. Dessert? Consider nearby Hugo’s, where the Mexican street food menu includes churros served with ice cream.

Austria Vancouver Club

5851 Westminster Highway, Richmond, BC

The closest you’ll get to a night out in Salzburg without jetting off to Europe, Richmond’s charming Austria Club hosts family-friendly Friday dinners for in-the-know locals and visitors. Traditional homestyle dishes are the approach, which often means hearty meals of schnitzel or beef stroganoff, plus soup starters and potato salad sides. You’ll find a warm welcome from the regulars in the colourful dining room, complete with checkered tablecloths and village-themed wall art.
