D & ID Update: April 2023

Team Richmond had the pleasure of being the host city for the CARHA Hockey World Cup hockey tournament, from March 19^th to March 26^th, 2023.

What is the CARHA Hockey World Cup?

Every four years, the CARHA Hockey World Cup is organized and hosted in a select Canadian city by CARHA Hockey (CARHA stands for Canadian Adult Recreational Hockey Association). This event attracts not only participants from Canada and the U.S. but also all over Asia and Europe. Approximately 100 teams from 10 different countries travel to the host city for the week-long competition.

For the 2020 games, the CARHA Hockey World Cup was meant to come to Richmond. However, due to Covid and restrictions, the tournament was rescheduled to 2023.

The city of Richmond was ecstatic to finally host the games this year and played a huge role in setting up activities at the Athlete’s Village in the Sheraton Vancouver Airport Hotel.

The Athletes Village was stationed at the hotel’s Britannia Ballroom and provided a wide range of evening activities for hockey participants to take part in, including nighttime karaoke, beverages supplied by Lulu Island Winery, beer pong, air hockey, and more.

Tourism Richmond hosted a visitor booth at the Athletes Village to provide visitor servicing to curious CARHA Hockey World Cup participants (and their friends and family members that travelled with them). The visitor booth was well received, and attracted visitors from all over the world, including Australia, Italy, Kazakhstan, and more!

To make the event even more memorable, Tourism Richmond worked with local partners to provide live food events at the visitor booth. On one of the days, Suhang Restaurant supplied Shanghainese dumplings and spring rolls. The homemade dumplings attracted numerous hockey players, who thoroughly enjoyed the tasteful experience.

To further provide CARHA Hockey World Cup players an authentic taste of Richmond, Blackball Dessert served bubble tea tastings on another day. The dessert and tea shop provided numerous flavours including passion fruit & mango, honey Yuja tea, milk tea, and more.
