It’s that time of year when many of us make grand commitments to improve our health and fitness. But if your New Year resolutions typically crumble faster than a teetering stack of shortbread cookies, consider taking a different approach in 2025.
One of the best ways to adopt new fitness habits is to find activities you’ll enjoy that also stretch your muscles and quicken your pulse a little. Looking for fresh and fun ways to get off the couch over the next few months? Check out our 10 suggestions to try in Richmond this year.
1. 6PACK INDOOR BEACH
#115-13180 Mitchell Road, Richmond, BC
You don’t have to hop on a plane if you want to hit the beach in a T-shirt this winter. Instead, you can run across the sand at this popular––and fully undercover––Richmond facility. Gather some friends to rent a beach volleyball court or consider working up a sweat with an archery tag session where you’ll be chasing each other around while firing (and dodging) safety-tipped arrows. It’s a great way to exercise and have a blast at the same time.
2. GAME ON, GO!
#1040-9111 Beckwith Road, Richmond, BC
Heart rate-raising fun is also on the menu at this new interactive attraction in Richmond––which is divided into four illuminated rooms that make you feel like you’re inside a video game. A workout for both brain and body, the themed spaces range from agility testing target throwing to a room where you have to move fast to follow lighted tiles. It’s a great way to boost your stamina, coordination, problem-solving skills and more.
3. CLIP ‘N CLIMB
#120-1751 Savage Road, Richmond, BC
Flexing muscles that haven’t moved much for years is a great reason to try climbing––especially at this hugely popular indoor facility. Aimed at everyone from first-timers to experienced carabiner-clippers, you’ll find 75 challenges and 25 cleverly designed walls to tackle at your own pace. For the adventurous climber, take the Leap of Faith: a five-metre pole climb followed by a mid-air leap to a swinging punch bag!
4. Richmond Olympic Oval
6111 River Road, Richmond, BC
Still keen to climb? You’ll find Metro Vancouver’s tallest climbing wall at the city’s landmark 2010 Winter Olympics venue, now a well-used community fitness and activity centre with a huge array of programs and health-forward facilities. We suggest purchasing a one-month pass so you can try everything from yoga classes to state-of-the-art gym equipment to drop-in or bookable basketball, badminton and more.
5. WEST COAST MINI PUTT
7391 Elmbridge Way, Richmond, BC
If your new fitness regimen requires a less challenging start, head to this unassuming city-centre building for an activity that’s all about fun. Golfing skills are not required to tackle the 18 indoor holes here, and you’ll also find quirky artworks and a cool glow-in-the-dark area to keep things entertaining. When you’re ready, consider graduating to one of Richmond’s full-sized outdoor golf courses for a longer leg-stretch.
6. WALK RICHMOND
Various locations
Most of us enjoy fresh-air strolls, but we don’t always find time to do them. In 2025, why not schedule your sauntering via this friendly city walking series? The fee-free guided wanders operate up to four times a month at different locations, and they’re aimed at all ages and fitness levels. Each walk takes around an hour and the upcoming roster includes Finn Slough, Paulik Park and the West Dyke Trail. Keen to give it a try? All you have to do is turn up and start walking!
7. SOUTH FRASER BIRD TRAIL
Various locations
Add to the physical benefits of stretching your legs by enjoying the proven mental health positives of hanging out in nature. This official BC Bird Trail showcases some of the Richmond highlights of the Pacific Flyway migratory route, taking you out for some fresh air encounters with our feathered friends at Iona Beach Regional Park, Terra Nova Rural Park and beyond. It’s a great way to discover a fascinating new hobby plus a more active approach to life. For a bird trail-specific Richmond itinerary, click here.
8. RICHMOND OLYMPIC PARKRUN
Intersection of Cambie Street and River Road
Elevate your sweat levels at this weekly 5km group run, which kicks-off at 9:00am every Saturday near the Richmond Olympic Oval. You’ll join lots of friendly participants––some running, some jogging, some walking–-and you’ll discover a great way to challenge yourself while watching your speed and fitness levels rise over time. There is no fee to join this popular community event, but pre-registration is required for first-timers (via the link above).
9. Biking
Various locations
Richmond is a great place to hop in the saddle for a fresh air fix and a scenic day out. In fact, you’ll find more than 87km of designated, family-friendly and relatively flat cycling trails to explore here. Don’t have your own wheels? Check out the city’s Lime public e-bike and e-scooter program or rent from Steveston’s Village Bikes. For maps and more information on area trails, visit this official Cycling in Richmond page.
10. Swimming
Various locations
A great way to activate dormant muscles is to slide into one of Richmond’s two indoor pools (there are also two local outdoor pools that operate in spring and summer). Watermania and the city centre’s Aquatic Centre each have great facilities and offer both public swimming as well as classes in everything from aquafit to fitness classes to special programs for over-55s. For more information, visit the City of Richmond’s Aquatic Services page.
