Spring is officially here. And that means rainy days, sunny skies, and lots of newly emerging flowers to keep your camera lens busy. But there’s also a great selection of fun things to do in Richmond this month––with both indoor and outdoor options to suit the changeable weather. 1. RICHMOND CHERRY BLOSSOM FESTIVAL
Garry Point Park, 12011 Seventh Avenue, Richmond, BC

Admission: free
Aim for lots of selfies at this super-scenic, family-friendly celebration of cherry blossoms and Japanese culture. Alongside more than 250 flowering Akebono trees, you’ll encounter displays and demonstrations from bonsai to origami and beyond. Live drum, dance and folk singing performances add to the festivities and there are plenty of opportunities to try Japanese dishes as well. 2. RESTLESS BY NATURE: MARY SUI YEE WONG, 1990s TO THE PRESENT
Richmond Art Gallery, 7700 Minoru Gate, Richmond, BC
April 12 to June 8
Admission: free
This fascinating retrospective showcases the work of Vancouver-raised Wong, who is renowned for addressing themes of cultural history, familial legacy and personal memory. Featuring sculpture, video, costume, photography and more, the multimedia show launches with an admission-free opening reception on April 12––complete with a performance from the Vancouver Chinese Choir.

3. STEVESTON FOLK GUILD PRESENTS THE FERA TWINS

The Guild’s latest show in the restored Chinese Bunkhouse building at Britannia Shipyards presents virtuoso singer-songwriting sisters Courtney and Stephanie Fera. Hailing from suburban Vancouver and fusing harmony-forward country, rock, alternative and pop sensibilities, bring your friends along for a great toe-tapping night out in this unique Steveston heritage venue.

4. PRIDE AND PREJUDICE

The city’s Gateway Theatre concludes its 40th season with a boisterous, fast-paced and richly entertaining retelling of Jane Austen‘s classic novel. Love, marriage and societal pressures are on the dance cards for Elizabeth, her sisters and Mr. Darcy––while this production’s light and witty approach makes it a heartwarming and hilarious frolic for die-hard Austen fans and newbies alike.

5. EARTH WEEK

Richmond’s diverse array of Earth Week happenings is a great opportunity to head outside as spring unfurls across the city. From gardening workshops to kid-friendly treasure hunts and from tree tours to flowerpot decorating, you’ll find special activities at Richmond Nature Park, Terra Nova Rural Park, Paulik Neighbourhood Park and beyond.

6. SPRING POTTERY SALE
Richmond Arts Centre Annex, 7660 Minoru Gate, Richmond, BC

Admission: free
The first of two annual sales by the city’s popular ceramics club serves up a kaleidoscopic array of brilliant local artisanship. Give yourself plenty of time to peruse the tables and you’ll find everything from unique vases to colourful bowls and from must-have mugs to whimsical figurines that would make perfect gifts. The next sale is in November so don’t miss this three-day April event!

7. BIRDING FOR BEGINNERS

A perfect introduction to one of the world’s fastest-growing hobbies, book your spot for this birding 101 event at one of Richmond’s favourite outdoor spaces. Iona is a hotbed of avian life––we saw eagles, northern harriers and red-winged blackbirds on our last visit––and your expert guide will offer lots of insider tips on where to look, how to tell birds apart and how to effectively use binoculars.
