For many of us, September is the perfect month in Richmond: there’s a golden glow to the sky as well as a full menu of unique activities to check out. From a seafood celebration to a new museum show and from a brilliant birding event to a cultural open house at multiple locations, there are lots of reasons to extend your summer for several more weeks here. 1. THE FAB FOUR

Take your seat in the River Rock’s glitzy Show Theatre for this Hey Jude-tastic evening of fab music from one of the world’s most popular Beatles tribute acts. 2. RICHMOND FARM FEST

This family-friendly event showcases the city’s rich and vibrant agricultural scene with an entertaining array of activities and experiences. Kids will love the plant labyrinth and Little Farmers zone; older visitors will like the garden displays, farmers’ market and culinary demonstrations; and everyone will enjoy the live music and wagon tours. 3. WINGS OVER IONA

A perfect reason to visit one of B.C.’s finest birding destinations, don’t miss this family-friendly fiesta of all-things feathered and more. Information stands and interactive booths (don’t miss the bird banders) profile regional flora and fauna, and you’ll have plenty of time to explore the trails. Look for northern harriers, red-winged blackbirds and other avians migrating along the epic Pacific Flyway.

4. LONG TABLE DINNER WITH NERO TONDO

Snuffle up some information on the fascinating world of fungi at this new family-friendly travelling exhibition from the Royal BC Museum. You’ll discover the cultural history, ecological importance and beguiling beauty of our region’s mushroom scene via some eye-opening imagery, amazing 3D models and highly inviting interactive displays.

6. THE MAPLE ROAD EXPERIENCE

This brand new yearlong exhibition tells the story of local skateboarder, Kevin Harris, who built a legendary half-pipe in his own backyard––encouraging a community of dynamic city skateboarders and launching his own international pro career. This fascinating show explores Richmond’s grassroots skateboarding culture via historic photos, vintage boards and cool interactive elements.

7. DIVERS’ CATCH GALA

Hosted by the BC Dive Fisheries Society, this inaugural celebration of our region’s incredible dive-harvested seafood features a taste-tripping menu of delicacies prepared by a powerhouse array of brilliant chefs. Book ahead and you’ll soon be sampling highly inventive geoduck, sea urchin and sea cucumber dishes. Tickets include tasting plates, drinks and a full evening of entertainment.

8. STEVESTON BEER FEST

Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site, 12138 Fourth Avenue, Richmond, BC

Organized by O’Hare’s Pub and staged in Steveston’s heritage Cannery complex, this hugely popular annual event is back. With more than 100 beers to sample alongside some tasty sweet and savoury bites from local restaurants, it’s a great way to discover delicious brews while also enjoying a smashing night out with friends. Book ahead, though: it sells out every year.

9. CULTURE DAYS

Various locations in Richmond, BC

Admission: free

This brilliant Canada-wide event includes more than 100 Richmond happenings, ranging from free art demonstrations to live music performances and from walking tours to hands-on craft workshops. Many activities take place on the weekend of September 20, but others are scheduled throughout the month and into October—check the link above for the latest information.

10. THE HAUNTED SEA

Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site, 12138 Fourth Avenue, Richmond, BC
September 27 to November 2 (10:00am to 5:00pm)
Admission: Adults $13.25; seniors $11.25; youth 17 and under free

This all-ages Cannery happening promises a creepy variety of sea creatures and ocean-themed exhibits cleverly crafted from recycled materials. You’ll discover a new appreciation for our aquatic neighbours while also learning what we can each do to help protect them. Don’t forget to pick-up a themed scavenger hunt and activity booklet for your kids at the front desk.
