The rainy days of fall are rolling in but there are still plenty of reasons to head outside in Richmond this month. From live music to a unique theatre show and from a gallery opening to Thanksgiving events, check out our 10 top October happenings below. Additionally, there are also some local Culture Days activities to consider, especially in early October. 1. INTO THE DEEP
Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site, 12138 Fourth Avenue, Richmond, BC

This month-long, Halloween-forward happening at Steveston’s creaky-floored Cannery complex invites you to snap photos of sea critters––all cleverly crafted from recycled plastic and ocean waste. You can post your images of the exhibit on social media to receive discounted admission, and those in costume can also enter to win a gift basket. Additionally, there’s an October 19 movie matinee screening of “Beetlejuice” in the Boiler House Theatre (tickets $5).
2. STEVESTON SCARECROW CRAWL
Steveston Village, Richmond, BC
October 1 to October 31
Admission: free
Get up close and personal with a creative collection of scarecrows––lurking outside (and sometimes inside) stores, cafes and restaurants throughout Steveston Village. There are prizes for the best scarecrows, so you can expect a competitive array of unique creations to snap photos of while you explore on foot. In recent years, we’ve spotted everything from a large silver-hued robot to an elegant lady dressed for a yesteryear ball.

3. CULTURE DAYS: TRAM MEETS BUS
Steveston Tram, 4011 Moncton Street, Richmond, BC
October 3 (10:00am to 5:00pm)
Admission: free
A cool opportunity to visit Steveston’s century-old tramcar 1220 alongside a guest star appearance from a local 1957 transit bus––buses like this one replaced the region’s interurban trams in the 1950s in a transition program known as “Rails to Rubber.” You can compare the two transport modes by climbing aboard each vehicle, and you’ll also find additional family-friendly activities throughout the day. Note: the bus will only be onsite from noon to 4:00pm.

4. RICHMOND OVAL PUBLIC ART WALKING TOUR
Richmond Olympic Oval, 6111 River Road, Richmond, BC
October 3 (1:00pm to 2:30pm)
Admission: free (registration required)
This is the final 2026 installment of a highly successful monthly program that’s been running in the city throughout spring and summer. Meeting at the Oval’s main entrance, you’ll be treated to a fascinating on-foot exploration of the diverse contemporary artworks on display at the landmark 2010 Olympic Winter Games venue. Led by expert Jeffrey Boone, the 90-minute tour is aimed at participants of all ages. Space is limited, so be sure to register in advance via the link above.

5. OKTOBERFEST

Admission: $50 (members $45)
Don’t miss this authentic Oktoberfest party evening, complete with beer, games, dancing, live music and a hearty array of seasonal comfort food––your choices include bratwurst, schnitzel, cabbage rolls and roast chicken. A great night out and a perfect opportunity for non-members to discover exactly what Richmond’s Austria Vancouver Club is all about. Book ahead to reserve your spot since there are only two dates this month. Lederhosen not required!
6. THANKSGIVING DINNER AT OVA
Versante Hotel, 8499 Bridgeport Road, Richmond, BC
October 9 to October 12
Admission: $62 to $75 per person
If you haven’t yet experienced the new OVA Restaurant at Richmond’s stylish Versante Hotel, this is a tasty and inviting way to try it out. They’re offering a delicious three-course Thanksgiving menu bookended by a duck confit terrine appetizer and a butternut squash tiramisu dessert. In between, you’ll have an entrée choice of either herb-roasted turkey roulade or slow-roasted prime rib. Book ahead via the link above since there is limited availability.

7. CRANBERRY SALE
Richmond Nature Park, 11851 Westminster Highway, Richmond, BC

Admission: free
The changing colours of local trees indicate that fall is finally here. But another autumnal signifier is the much-anticipated arrival of Richmond’s ruby-red cranberry harvest. One of our city’s most important agricultural crops, you can pick up some fresh treats––donated by Ocean Spray––at this fundraiser for the Nature Park’s educational programs. Just in time for Thanksgiving dinner, one bag costs $8, two bags are $15 and three bags are $20.

8. SECRET INGREDIENTS

Admission: tickets $35
Love cake AND live theatre? This is the event for you! Local artist Keely Rois O’Brien will bake and deliver a “subversive cake” for each show, based on a chosen submission from members of the public invited to express something to someone they would find difficult to state in real life. This funny and entertaining interactive show explores the idea of unspoken feelings––while also giving audiences the chance to sample some delicious cake at the same time!

9. STEVESTON FOLK GUILD PRESENTS TROUT LAKE TRIO

Fall is the perfect time for a cozy concert at the intimate Chinese Bunkhouse at Steveston’s Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site. October’s Guild show features one of Vancouver’s most popular goodtime folk and roots acts, performing an eclectic array of heartfelt and often humorous songs on multiple instruments––fiddle, flute and upright bass included. 10. RICHMOND ART GALLERY OPENING RECEPTION & ARTIST TOUR
Richmond Cultural Centre, 7700 Minoru Gate, Richmond, BC

Admission: free
Hailing from Hong Kong and now based in Richmond, meet artist Lam Tung Pang at his first Canadian solo show, presenting the “playful and poetic” body of work he has created since arriving here more than three years ago. Alongside curator Zoë Chan, he will join you for an informal tour of his paintings, drawings and multimedia creations at this exhibition launch event. Keep in mind that this show will be running at the admission-free city centre gallery until January 3.
