Blue-sky summer days in BC can mean heading outside to soak up some rays or feasting on a rich bounty of locally-grown seasonal produce. But if you’re really smart, you’ll combine both with a visit to a Metro Vancouver U-pick farm.

There are several Richmond options for those craving a family-friendly outdoor activity with tasty take-home treats. Keep in mind that some farms only take cash and hours can vary—contact them before you head out to make sure they’re open.

As for what’s available, strawberries are almost done for the year; raspberries and cherries are ripe and ready; and blueberries are just around the corner. Many farms also sell produce they’ve picked themselves, including other fruits and a wide array of veggies.

If you can’t make it to a U-pick, there are also lots of fresh-focused farm stands and roadside vendors to visit throughout the city—including the ever-friendly produce stalls at Kwantlen St. Farmers Market and Steveston Farmers & Artisans Market.

But if you’re ready to pick your own berries this summer, slap on the sunscreen, warm-up your picking muscles and dig out that floppy sunhat at one (or all) of these three Richmond hot spots.

The juicy, super-sweet strawberries are almost over for the year at this popular U-pick spot, complete with its landmark yellow barn. But if you miss them this season, the farm stand opens again in early August, offering a wide range of fresh-picked veggies to dive into.

Expect everything from beets to sweet corn and from kale to zucchini. It’s the perfect place to gather up some fresh produce for that huge canning project you’ve always meant to do.

At this time of year, it’s all about the cherries at bucolic Cherry Lane Farm, with varieties including Van, Sam, Sue and Royal Ann available. In-the-know locals wait with bated breath for these juicy treats to be ready, so make sure you arrive as soon possible before they’re all gone!

It’s not all about U-pick, of course. The farm also grows lots of other seasonal fruit and vegetables for sale to the public—including apples, plums, grapes, rhubarb and even mulberries. They’re usually open to visitors from now until October—contact them to see what’s available before you head over.

Call ahead in early July to find out exactly when this popular farm’s pesticide-free U-pick blueberries will be ripe and ready. And if you don’t want to do the work, they also sell well-priced boxes of picked-for-you produce as well.

It’s not just blueberries you’ll find here: they also have a good selection of fresh-picked, often organic produce for sale, sometimes including tomatoes, grapes and more.
