From Best Thai to Best Seafood and more, the city’s restaurants appeared on the winner’s podium in several highly competitive and carefully judged segments this year. And that includes a major success in the hotly contested Best Casual Chinese category, where Richmond swept the board by winning Gold, Silver and Bronze as well as receiving an Honourable Mention.

Casual Chinese

Befitting Richmond’s unrivalled position as the home of North America’s most celebrated Asian dining scene, the city won all three top spots in the Best Casual Chinese category at this year’s awards.

The Gold winner was The Fish Man, with the awards’ official announcement noting that, “to find anything fresher on your plate, you’d have to head straight into the sea.”

Silver was won by Max Noodle House, which was described as Metro Vancouver’s “last proper Hong Kong-style wonton noodle house.”

And Bronze went to Shanghai Wonderful for a wealth of highly authentic dishes that includes delicious radish cakes and soup dumplings.

But that’s not all. Located on Richmond’s city centre Alexandra Road (known by many locals as Food Street), Yuan’s Garden––which regularly attracts weekend line-ups for its delectable dim sum––also won a well-deserved Honourable Mention in the Best Casual Chinese category.

More Champions

All the winners in the 2024 Vancouver Magazine Restaurant Awards were drawn from a finalist list of more than 280 local dining establishments. Each category was then judged by a panel of experts who sampled, evaluated and eventually designated the region’s top dining establishments––creating a go-to menu of restaurants that every local and visitor should save time to check out.

Several popular Richmond restaurants––plus some under-the-radar hidden gems––took their well-earned places at the high table on this year’s list of winners. These include Steveston’s Baan Lao, which won Bronze in the Best Thai category and which was praised for its “flawless service and outstanding execution of high-end Thai dishes like pu pat phong kari.”

Two additional Richmond eateries also received well-deserved Honourable Mentions in the 2024 competition. They are Sea Harbour––in the Best Upscale Chinese category––and The Fish Man, which added to its Best Casual Chinese Gold win with an Honourable Mention in the Best Seafood category.

An additional local Honourable Mention came in the Best Chain category where Maruhachi Ramen––with branches in Vancouver and on Richmond’s No. 3 Road––was justly lauded. The awards’ citation noted that this comfort food hot spot is where “noodle-lovers line up for perfectly balanced broth and soy eggs.”

And in perhaps the awards’ most competitive category, one Richmond eatery also won an Honourable Mention in the prestigious Best New Restaurant class. Missing Chopsticks earned its accolade for its unique approach to fusing contemporary French and Asian culinary sensibilities––on a seasonally changing menu that recently included zucchini flowers served with wonton stuffing and handmade pasta.

Diners’ Vote

The newest edition of the Vancouver Magazine Restaurant Awards was also notable this year for reintroducing the Readers Choice element of its competition. And, once again, Richmond made a splash among the 45,000 public votes that were cast.

In the Best Neighbourhoods category, readers decided that the Best Richmond restaurant is Baan Lao, already a podium winner in the Best Thai class. And when they voted for Metro Vancouver’s Best Food Truck, readers chose much-loved Japadog––which has a truck at Richmond’s Lansdowne Centre plus storefront branches at the city’s McArthurGlen Designer Outlet and Vancouver International Airport.
