The blue skies of summer are finally here. And while it’s tempting to simply flop on the grass and eat your body weight in ice cream, there’s also a full menu of super-cool things to do in Richmond this month. From alfresco festivals to shoreline walks and from heritage sites to movie nights, now’s the time to slap on the sunscreen and dive into a sparkling array of brilliant local happenings. 1. SUMMER PICNIC SERIES AT LULU ISLAND WINERY

This is the perfect way to slow down and enjoy a sunny Sunday afternoon with your friends and family in Richmond. Bring a picnic blanket and stake out your spot inside the winery’s leafy grapevine tunnel, and you’ll also be treated to live music, an individual charcuterie box (one box per ticket) and the chance to purchase delicious Lulu Island wines to accompany your picnic-based revelry.

2. INDOOR SUMMER NIGHTS

Hosted undercover in the mall’s air-conditioned Centre Court, snag your first-come first-served viewing spot for these cost-free evening movie screenings––while also tucking into dinner from one of the food court counters or nearby restaurants (movie night deals available). The month-long menu of family-friendly films is being decided by a public vote (we’re rooting for The Goonies).

3. LONDON FARM’S FAMILY FARM DAY

This kid-friendly annual event at one of the city’s most beloved heritage sites is jam-packed with things to do for visitors of all ages. From live music to raptor displays and from pony rides to face-painting––plus lots of hands-on activities for children who like to keep busy––make sure you also save time to explore the historic farmhouse, restored barns and delightful flower-filled grounds.

4. STEVESTON VINTAGE FAIR

A great addition to your Steveston Village day out, this popular alfresco event features a full array of handpicked, browse-tastic vendors showcasing collectibles, artisan goods, vintage finds and more. The live music adds to the relaxing vibes––and there are plenty of restaurants, museum attractions and boutique stores nearby to keep you fully occupied.

5. RICHMOND SUNFLOWER FESTIVAL

While the weather-dependent opening date and finalized ticket prices were not available at the time of writing, this annual Richmond Country Farms flower fiesta will definitely be returning this month. 6. RICHMOND GARLIC FESTIVAL

This annual grassroots celebration of all-things garlicky is a smashing day out for all the family. From farm tours to fresh-grown produce and from live music to a cool kids’ zone, there’s plenty to keep everyone fully entertained here. 7. GARRY POINT PARK/WEST DYKE WALK

Walk Richmond’s series of free, drop-in guided strolls continues with one of their most popular summer evening routes. Aimed at walkers of all ages and fitness levels, arrive before 7:00pm, sign in and you’ll soon be enjoying breathtaking shoreline views––complete with birds, wildflowers and mountain peaks––on a restorative, hour-long Garry Point Park and West Dyke Trail weave.

8. RICHMOND MARITIME FESTIVAL

The 22nd annual edition of this seafaring-themed extravaganza offers a full weekend of family-friendly fun. Arrive early and dive into everything from live music to craft demonstrations and from food trucks to hands-on activities for kids. Make sure you save time to check out the historic wooden boats on the dock as well as the evocative heritage buildings lining the Britannia shoreline.

9. RICHMOND DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL

Imperial Landing, Richmond, BC
August 23 (9:00am to 6:00pm)
Admission: free

A great accompaniment to a Saturday Maritime Festival visit, head east along the Steveston shoreline to discover one of BC’s biggest dragon boat racing events. Dozens of teams will be zipping across the Fraser River in a series of adrenalin-fueled contests. And the excitement continues onshore with a community festival featuring live music, food vendors, a marketplace and more.

10. OVAL COMMUNITY DAY

Richmond Olympic Oval, 6111 River Road, Richmond, BC

Dive into this festival-like day out at the landmark 2010 Olympic Games venue that’s now a popular community sports centre. Alongside street artists, live performers, food trucks and DJ-driven music, you’ll find sports and fitness demonstrations and hands-on activities––including a huge inflatable obstacle course––all designed to showcase the cool programs available at the Oval.
