It’s that time of year when those rich, shiny-sheened round cakes start popping up in almost every bakery and food store in Richmond. The 2025 Mid-Autumn Festival (and its attendant cake-based feasting) is almost here––but you don’t have to wait until October 6, the official full moon day to dive right in.

Celebrated by cultures throughout Asia––including China, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Korea and Japan––the historic festival traces its roots to a time when successful harvests were the lifeblood of every community. The ancients believed that honouring the moon every fall would help deliver essential bounties for the coming year––and that traditionally meant offering fruits and treats to keep the moon on their side.

These days, the festival isn’t just about giving thanks for the harvest; it’s also about families and friends gathering together to celebrate––much like North America’s Thanksgiving festivities. Today, heartfelt gatherings are the foundation of this annual event––along with sharing and savouring some special edible treats.

MOONCAKES GALORE

Over the centuries, mooncakes––in the shape of round, full moons––have become a staple of Mid-Autumn festivities. These rich, often ornate pastries typically have a thin, pie-like casing enclosing a sweet (or sometimes savoury) paste-like filling such as lotus seed, red bean or salted duck yolk. They are perfect for sharing in small wedges rather than fully consuming on your own––unless you missed lunch, of course.

We’ve rounded up several Richmond spots where you can pick up some delicious mooncakes to celebrate this year’s Mid-Autumn festival.

Kamdo Bakery

#130 – 6211 No. 3 Rd, Richmond, BC

This bright and inviting Richmond favourite serves a year-round variety of tempting Hong Kong style pastries such as sausage buns and flaky egg tarts. But Kam Do Bakery is also well known every fall for its smooth, handcrafted, golden-baked mooncakes. This year, its popular classic is back once again: a luscious Twin Yolks Lotus Seed Paste Mooncake!

Daan Go Cake Lab

#100 – 4731 Garden City Rd, Richmond, BC

A hotbed of inventive sweet treats throughout the year, Daan Go Cake Lab––founded by MasterChef Canada winner Christopher Siu––is offering two main mooncake options for 2025. Beautifully packaged in four-cake gift boxes, you can choose from a Traditional Mooncake Set (with four different flavours) and a unique Snow Skin Mooncake Set, which includes mango cheesecake, salted egg yolk, jasmine white peach and Houjicha black sesame flavours.

L’OTUS CAKE BOUTIQUE

#103 – 8580 Cambie Road, Richmond, BC

Famous for its multi-layered crepe cakes, L’otus Cake Boutique (they also have a second location on Alderbridge Way) is diving into this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival with several varieties of L’otus Lava Custard Mooncake, each with rich, creamy centres. Intriguing flavours include black truffle, roasted oolong, matcha yuzu and, of course, the classic salted egg yolk.
