From green shoots to boisterous birdsong, small signs of spring are popping up throughout the city, which means it’s time to start thinking about getting off the couch and waving goodbye to winter.

1. RAG COLLAGE CLUB

Exercise your creative muscles at this art-making social event, a new monthly adult happening where you can craft to your heart’s content while also chatting with friends, sipping tea and listening to music. A great way to decompress for a couple of hours, all materials are provided and this month’s theme––Upcycle––focuses on creating something new from something old. Space is limited so be sure to pre-register via the link above.

2. RICHMOND NATURE PARK
11851 Westminster Hwy
Admission: free
Dive into Family Day at one of Richmond’s most popular parks. You and your kids (all-ages are welcome) can enjoy everything from nature walks to arts and crafts and from story time to puppet shows. Dress appropriately for the weather, but be sure to warm-up inside the park’s Nature House where you’ll also find exhibits on local flora and fauna. There are additional Family Day happenings at Steveston Tram and Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site.

3. CHILDREN’S ARTS FESTIVAL
Richmond Cultural Centre, 7700 Minoru Gate
February 17 (10:30am to 5:00pm)
Admission: free
Creative kids will want to spend all day at this fun-tastic event in city centre Richmond––complete with lots of live performances and a host of hands-on activities. Free activities include knitting, face painting and the chance to collaborate on a pollinator-themed mural, while you’ll also find storytelling, lion dances, ukulele playing and much more. Check the website for the day’s roster of events, including some additional paid registration art classes.

4. OTOSAN
Gateway Theatre, 6500 Gilbert Road
February 17 to February 22
Admission: adults $23; under-18s $13
A great show for kids aged four to eleven, book ahead for this magical and immersive puppet performance. Staged in Gateway’s intimate Studio B space, join Shizu and her father Otosan as they venture to the remote north––encountering wolves, grizzly bears, snowy owls and many other surprises. Based on a true story, this 45-minute show from the Little Onion Puppet Company also comes with relaxed performance and sign language performance options.

5. STEVESTON FOLK GUILD PRESENTS MOUNTAIN SOUND
Chinese Bunkhouse, Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site, 5180 Westwater Drive

Admission: $15
Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site, home to one of the city’s most evocative performance spaces. The Chinese Bunkhouse––a heritage building where cannery workers lived more than a century ago––hosts regular concerts by the Steveston Folk Guild concert. And this month’s show features indie folk rock trio Mountain Sound weaving a tapestry of original music, vibrant storytelling and welcoming vibes.
