It’s the season when friendly ghosts and grinning skeletons walk the streets of Richmond searching for a pumpkin-pleasing good time. And this year, the city is serving up a brimming cauldron of spook-tacular happenings. Pick out your perfect outfit, gather your ghoulish cohorts and dive right into these cobweb-covered slices of fall-season fun. Trick or treat? Why not both?!

The Haunted Sea

This unique all-ages happening at Steveston’s creaky-floored Cannery serves up a cool array of sea creatures and ocean-themed exhibits cleverly created from upcycled materials. Profiling the problem of plastic pollution and showing what we can all do to help, it’s an event that’s both entertaining and educational. Consider visiting on October 11, 18 or 25, when special ocean-themed short films will also be screened in the Boiler House Theatre (screenings are by-donation).

GHOSTS AND GRIPS

Work off all that Halloween candy before the big day even arrives at this unique family-friendly activity. The Oval’s towering climbing wall will be bristling with ghosts and ghouls of all skill levels competing in a dyno competition––but there will also be Halloween-themed games, activities, music and more. And those with great outfits could even win prizes in a spine-tingling costume contest!

CREATIVELY CRAFTED: GHOSTS ON A CANVAS

Uncover your inner ghoul at this family-friendly craft night in the heart of Steveston Village. All supplies are provided, enabling you to paint on canvas the kind of ghostly visage that’s been haunting your Halloween dreams for years. A great way to have fun and exercise your creative muscles at the same time, tickets also include a sweet treat. Note: participating children must be aged eight or over.

The Pumpkin Patch

This beloved Richmond Country Farms event includes photogenic farm animals and tractor-drawn wagon rides (plus weekend live music, train trundles and food trucks) as well as a corn maze and lots of autumnal decorations to point your camera at. Your admission ticket also comes with a Spartan apple and your chosen pumpkin (extra pumpkins are $6 each). While you’re here, visit the onsite boutique winery and huge produce market—decorative mini-pumpkins included.

SPELLBOUND PUMPKIN PATCH

Hop on your broomstick and head to Aberdeen Centre where the Central Atrium will be decorated with a diorama of pumpkin-forward décor. And be sure to visit on October 26 when free activities include a meet and greet with friendly witches (1:30pm to 2:30pm) as well as a cool magic show (3:00pm to 4:00pm). Show your store receipts and your kids can also dive into some face painting and balloon-twisting fun. Return on October 31 (3:00pm to 5:00pm) for trick-or-treating around the mall.

HALLOWEEN AT LANSDOWNE CENTRE

A Halloween hot spot for in-the-know locals, there will be plenty of spooky shenanigans at the city’s Lansdowne Centre this year. You’ll find selfie-ready decorations to snap photos with, while kids will love joining in the trick-or-treat activities. There’s also a huge Spirit Halloween store in the mall this time around––plus a returning feature that always draws the crowds: a themed mini train ride that’s a must for children ($5 per ride; 6 tickets for $20).

HAUNTED HARVEST HALLOWEEN

Head to this popular Richmond farm for their three-day Halloween happening aimed at the family. Activities range from graveyard tours to a haunted horse barn with extra surprises planned throughout the event. Saturday afternoon is particularly recommended for kids, with activities such as face painting, a scavenger hunt and magic potion making on the menu. The farm is also planning to have a corn maze this year. In addition, own-grown produce will be available, as well as snack plates, treat bags and more.

HALLOWEEN HOOT

Bring the family to Richmond Nature Park for this perfectly magical drop-in Halloween happening. The accessible Pond Trail will be fully adorned with spooky, selfie-ready decorations. And if you haven’t picked up your pumpkin this year, you can purchase one here to take home. Wrap up warmly for this outdoor event, but when you need a break from the chilly weather, head inside to the Nature House for displays, including a new mushroom-themed exhibit.

MINORU HALLOWEEN FIREWORKS FESTIVAL

The region’s biggest Halloween fireworks extravaganza isn’t just about watching cascading colours in the night sky, although that’s certainly the evening’s breath-taking finale.
